Dee Why to Curl Curl
The Dee Why to Curl Curl Coastal Walk is an approximately 1.5 km medium intensity formed trail with several natural stone steps along short steep areas.
It follows the cliff edge, offering spectacular views. At some points, the terrain is quite uneven, but there are always handrails to help when secure footing is needed.
Directions
- At the end of Pacific Parade in Dee Why, there is a grassy area with benches and a picnic table.
- The track starts at the end of this area, beginning with a well-formed path and natural surface that enhances the experience of being immersed in nature.
- Along the way, the route offers stunning ocean views and beautiful landscapes. There are three special lookouts – Gahnia, Tea Tree and Rulingia – with their locations marked in the picture below.
- A - Gahnia Lookout: Named after the tussock-forming sedge or clumping grass that is commonly found on the headland.
- B - Tea Tree Lookout: Located in the highest section of the track. The view north stretches as far as the Central Coast.
- C - Rulingia Lookout: Named after the low growing shrub with pink flowers. In spring, the flowers provide an amazing juxtaposition between the rugged sandstone rock platform and the beauty of the flowers.
The views go across Curl Curl Beach, Manly and North Head.
- Near Rulingia Lookout, the trail forks. The path to the left leads down to the North Curl Curl Rockpool.
- This pool was originally built in 1937. Having been destroyed by heavy seas in 1947, it was reconstructed in 1957. It is Warringah's most natural rockpool due to its location carved into
the exposed rock shelf. Only accessible by foot, the pool is dangerous during big swells.
- I had the opportunity to photograph the huge waves that formed on one of these occasions, as can be seen in the photos below
- After the fork, the track continues south before ending at Houston Parade, near the North Curl Curl Surf Life Saving Club.
- A very detailed description of the route can be found on the Bushwalk website.
